Why did I change (fast)?
As my 30th birthday loomed and my scales groaned under 260 lbs, I vowed not to roll into my thirties still resembling a well-stuffed burrito. With the unfortunate passing of my grandmother—who had waged a lengthy battle with diabetes—I inherited a bit of cash from her estate. In a lightbulb moment, I decided to splurge on a medically supervised diet program. They cost an arm and a leg, but given my track record with the bargain bin diet plans like Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem, which did zilch for me, it seemed like a high-stakes bet worth making.
Family History
Diabetes and high blood pressure are practically family traditions on my mom’s side—everyone’s in on the act. My mom, her parents, and a parade of older relatives have all danced this tango. It’s like a rite of passage that nobody actually wants to attend. And then there’s the obesity saga; we’re not just keeping up with the Joneses, we’re outpacing them in pounds! Post-me, my mom began her journey into the world of plus sizes. I hit my growth spurt at puberty, not so much in height but in width, and by college, I was tipping the scales north of 200 lbs. Clearly, it’s time for me to break the cycle—or at least bend it a little.
Why I fast?
At one point, a lightbulb went off in my head—or maybe it was my stomach growling too loudly. I realized that eating might just be the problem. I’m talking about eating the wrong things, eating too much, and at the worst times—like a 2 a.m. burger and fries bingefest. Eating anything at all seemed suspiciously hazardous. So, I entertained a radical thought: What if I just… stopped eating? Food had me in a chokehold, like a bad habit I couldn’t kick, and junk food was my main vice. The idea of quitting cold turkey was tempting until I remembered a minor snag in my plan—without food, one tends to starve to death. Since the mere act of eating seemed to send me into an addictive spiral, I signed up for a medically supervised program dubbed as PSMF, which stands for Protein Sparing Modified Fast. Fast forward 4.5 months, and bam!… I’m 70 pounds lighter. But wait, there’s more! It wasn’t just the weight loss; it was like my body went into full renovation mode. Old sunburns, ringworm scars, and those mysterious marks that appeared out of nowhere—all gone. Vanished like my cravings at a veggie buffet. And after subsisting on 500 calories a day, I felt better than ever. What sorcery was this? This bizarre turnaround sent me on a 17-year deep dive into the world of fasting. Let’s just say, I never looked at food the same way again.
